How to get an extended test drive
To get an extended test drive, ask the dealer directly for an overnight or 24-hour drive of the exact car you are considering, show that you are a serious buyer, and agree the terms in writing first: how long, how many miles, and what insurance and deposit they need. Many dealers say yes to a buyer who is close to deciding.
Ask the right way
Call or email the salesperson or the sales manager, name the exact vehicle, and say plainly that you are deciding between it and one other car. A specific, serious request gets a yes far more often than a casual one.
Agree the terms first
Get the length of the drive, the mileage limit, any deposit and the insurance the dealer requires in writing before you take the keys. Your own policy usually has to cover you, so check it.
Use the time well
Drive your real commute, park it at home, fit the car seats, load the groceries and the sports gear, and try it at night. That is what a short drive never shows you.
Quick answers
Do dealers allow overnight test drives?
Many do for serious buyers, at the dealer's discretion. Policies vary by store and by car.
Do I need insurance for an extended test drive?
Usually yes. Dealers commonly require proof of your own insurance, and the law where you live applies.
